Zion Narrows Underwater - The Movie

In June of last year the two intrepid adventurers traveled, once again, under their pen names Louie & Lester Loupe. The culmination of our trip was to hike the Zion Narrows and get some great shots of the rocks in fantastic light. You can see one of Doug Whitney's shots at his site here:  http://dprestonwhitney.zenfolio.com/p448860142/h30566507#h30566507

Here is the only worthy shot I took and not a very good one at that. This is the story why.

When we got to Zion National Park, the Narrows were closed due to high swift water. The next morning rumors went around the village that they were going to open. We packed our gear, rented Five-Ten underwater boots and set out on the journey. From the top down to the village it is a 16 mile hike and requires a permit. We decided to go in from the village and see how much we could fit in in a half day.

What I didn't realize at the time is that the rocks can be brutal on your feet. Even with non-slip Five-Ten shoes, it wears you out. Another unknown was the current. The water fights you the whole way trying to prevent you from moving forward. I was in lousy shape at the time, but didn't realize how bad until I got about a mile into the canyon. The ambient temperature was about 100ºƒ and the water was 50ºƒ. Half of your body is freezing and the other half is boiling.

All in all, I only got a couple of shots because I was fighting the water, rocks and exhaustion.  Since that lesson, I have shed 15 lbs. and hike 5-6 miles a day. Next time I will be ready for the 16 mile "top-Down" version. Here is a video of the journey into the Zion Narrows.
